On December 16, local time, the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) issued a statement announcing that the tariff exemption period for 352 Chinese products, which was originally scheduled to expire at the end of 2022 (December 31), will be extended by nine months to September 30, 2023, and will take effect on January 1, 2023.

According to reports, U.S. Trade Representative Kiki Tai exempted 352 Chinese products from additional tariffs in March. These products include industrial parts such as pumps and motors, some auto parts and chemicals, bicycles and vacuum cleaners.

The U.S. Trade Representative's Office said the extension "will help coordinate further consideration of exemptions and the ongoing comprehensive review of the 'Section 301' tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump," the report said.

Former US President Trump imposed additional tariffs on Chinese goods exported to the US starting in July 2018 in accordance with Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.

The Biden administration has continued to retain these tariffs after taking office. According to US law, the 301 tariffs will be implemented for four years and will automatically expire upon expiration unless the USTR receives a request to continue enforcement.

USTR began soliciting public opinions last month to assess the effectiveness of the tariff increase. The deadline for comments is January 17.

Last October, the Office of the United States Trade Representative announced that it planned to re-exempt 549 Chinese imports from tariffs and solicit public opinions on the matter.

The Office of the United States Trade Representative issued a statement on March 23 this year, saying that it would re-exempt 352 items of tariffs on goods imported from China, a number less than the 549 items previously considered (197 products had their tariff exemptions expired). It applies to goods imported from China between October 12, 2021 and December 31, 2022.

Trump imposed tariffs based on the so-called Section 301. After taking office, US President Biden has been slow to decide whether to cancel the relevant tariffs.

Senior officials from China and the United States have continued to engage in dialogue since the meeting between the two heads of state in November. Officials from the two countries in the fields of economy, trade, military and climate change have held at least four face-to-face talks after the meeting between the two heads of state.
